Providencia
Providencia is a small town within the larger Dotacatchment area and part of the Copey district.Being south east of the main processing centrewithout a simple route, Coope Dota operate amicromill here, in order to maintain the quality. Thisis some of the higher altitudes in the area, and soharvests a little later in the season. Despite being separate from the main mill,Providencia is very much part of the Coope Dotafamily. In 2024, new manager Christian Chinchillaspent the year visiting and talking with each of their1070 members. With over 200 mills in the Tarrazúregion competing, Coope Dota’s people-firstapproach have helped the cooperative grow by 100new members in 2024 alone, continuing an upwardtrend for the last seven years.The cooperative have their own roastery andseparate café, supporting a growing agritourismindustry in the area. This encompasses farm tours,and coffee classes too.
Within their group, they support the youth in sports, seeing members in the Paris Olympics with Taekwondo and Cycling, as well as keeping an eye on the future by running a coffee school certified by Icafe. This is focussed on 17 and 18-year-olds and is on top of their diploma, covering all aspects of the industry from the cherries through to being a Barista. It has been running now for nearly 20 years.
80% of the land is protected forest, so perhaps it isno surprise environmental issues are at theforefront of their thinking too. The cooperative hasbeen certified as carbon neutral since 2011, and2024 saw the launch of their carbon removalproject. This uses the honey water left over fromprocessing to extract pollution from the air withtechnology developed in unison with CATIE (TheTropical Agricultural Research and Higher EducationCenter) and CAIA Alexandria (Advanced Center forApplied Research) institutes.
